LEDGEWOOD
VINEYARDS
WINEMAKER'S NOTES:
The 2000 Suisun Valley Zinfandel opens with a bright berry
and cherry nose with hints of chocolate. The complex raspberry
and blackberry fruit flavors carry hints of spice with earthy
notes and a touch of pepper. Moderate tannins and good acidity
contribute to a lively, refreshing mouthfeel, and a long
crisp finish adds a hint of plum.
APPELLATION:
Suisun Valley (Solano County) is not -- yet -- a well-known
appellation but the favorable soils and climate have stimulated
vineyard development by several major Napa Valley wineries
as well as local growers. The Ledgewood Vineyards Zinfandel
exemplifies the great promise this appellation offers.
VINEYARDS:
This is a small hillside vineyard near the Napa County line.
Warm daytime temperatures moderated by cool marine air in
the evenings contribute to complex grape flavors with good
acidity. The clone is from the Summit Lake vineyards on
Howell Mountain.
VINTAGE:
This was the fourth commercial harvest for this vineyard.
Despite the September heat, the harvest started mid-month
as usual, with no effect on the grapes' structure, which
was remarkable for such young vines. Yields were moderate,
under 4 tons per acre.
COMPOSITION:
Zinfandel 96%, Petite Sirah 2%, Carignane 2%
